Our dogs absolutely love car rides! They love sticking their big heads out of the window and enjoying everything we drive past. Smelling all the smells, feeling the wind, seeing all the sights. They love it! Even in the rain, if it isn’t raining too hard I will still put the window down for them and they love it. It makes road trips easy for sure! In the morning, I love to take them for a ride to our favorite local veteran owned coffee shop. The girls there are super sweet and love on them, and they give the dogs little dog bones. It makes their day! Then I’ll take the long way home and allow us all to enjoy the scenic route!
One morning shortly after we moved into our house, I loaded the pups up and hit the road to go get coffee and dog bones! It was very early in the morning, just after Cameron left for work and as I drove down the street I noticed that one of the project managers for the development was already here. I saw his car parked in front of one of the houses that was still being built and worked on. At that moment this overwhelming feeling of sadness came upon me and I felt the Spirit tell me to get him a cup of coffee as well. When we hear the Spirit of the Lord, we must always obey; so, two cups of coffee it is! I started thinking, I need to write a Bible verse on his cup. Not knowing if he was a believer or if he was saved, I thought that Ephesians 2:8 would be perfect! “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8).” I’ve found that a lot of people who truly don’t know the Gospel think that they have done so much stuff against God that they could never come into his presence or that they will not be forgiven. The beauty of that is that we can speak the truth to them, and let them know, that yes God will forgive you and you can have a relationship with Him and turn from your ways!
Well just as soon as I was thinking of Ephesians 2:8, I Kept feeling Isaiah 40:31. I thought, that is odd, it is not a verse I would normally pick. Then I thought, nah, Ephesians is the way to go!! Nope. Silly human, you’re wrong. Isaiah 40:31 would not rest from my soul. Okay God, I see what you’re doing. Isaiah it is, let me get out of your way and let you work the way you know best!
After getting the coffees, I pulled over and wrote the verse down on the coffee cup. Then I sent him a text message and told him that I had a coffee for him and was going to leave it on his truck. When I got back to our neighborhood I pulled over to his truck to put the coffee on it but he was outside. So I walked over and handed him the coffee. There was a couple of other guys with him and as I drove away I saw them standing there looking at the coffee cup.
The next day as I was walking to go get the mail, I ran into him. He asked me, "did I ever tell you that Isaiah 40:31" was my favorite verse and has a very special meaning to me?" I said no you didn't, to be honest I didn't even know if you were a Believer and I was going to go with Ephesians 2:8 but I kept hearing Isaiah 40:31 so I had to write that on the cup for you! He stood there for a moment and looked at me in shock. Then I asked him, " what is the special meaning of that verse to you?" He explained to me that when he was a child, he had a twin brother who passed away. After his brother passed away, somebody had given him an eagle statue with that verse on it and it brought him great comfort. Recently he and his wife were moving and that statue was broken and he was so upset. He went on to tell me how he was having such a really bad day, and was so exhausted. Then that verse came to him, at the right time and after just losing that statue!
I explained to him how it's not a verse that normally comes to me, and that I was going to go with Ephesians but I kept feeling the Spirit tell me to use this verse. I told him that God hears him, that God cares, and that God is answering him! He told me he still just could not get over that, and how when he received it, he went to his car and called his wife in amazement telling her that she would not believe what just happened. He hung the coffee sleeve with the verse on it, on his rear view mirror.
A few days later I had one of the warranty guys at the house, who happened to be there when the coffee came. He was one of the guys that was standing there
staring at the coffee cup as I drove away. This gentleman was also in shock and he told me how it was so weird how that happened and they were all in shock over it when the significance of the verse was explained to them that morning. The warranty person also asked me if I knew the significance of the verse when I gave it to him. I told him I did not and told him the whole story.
You see, the beauty of this is there was a man who was hurting and reaching out crying to God. I was the closest vessel that God could use at that moment in time. So God touched me and said move! He guided my steps and I yielded to everything the spirit said, and walked in obedience. This is how God chose at that moment to answer this man's prayers and let him know that there is peace and comfort for him and that God hears him. This brought this man so much comfort, but not only that. There were other people around him and they all saw what happened. So all of those people were touched by the glory of God that day!
But what if I did not yield to the spirit? What if I just went about my day rushing around doing what I needed to do before starting work? What if I thought yeah I could get him a coffee but, maybe he'll be gone by the time I get back. What if I thought, maybe he'll think I'm odd if I put a Bible verse on the cup for him. You see, if any of that had transpired Not only would he have gone about his day still in misery, but all of those other people would not have had that experience either. Who knows what that experience did to them! Who knows if that helped their faith grow and who knows how many people they've told!
We are God’s hands and feet and we need to allow him to use us in all ways. Even those things that may seem small, like when you walk by someone and feel the urge to talk with them and ask them if they are okay or need prayer. We never know what those people are praying and asking God for and we could be the answer to their prayer, or we could walk past them and let their prayers go unanswered at that moment. Rise up church to be the salt and light! Show love to those who God created in His own image, for you will never walk past someone that God does not love. Be that coffee delivery person for Jesus! Be on fire to spread the message! Offer love whenever you have the opportunity and don’t let doubt creep in!
